Anniversary Photographs Copyright Sarah Macmillan
September 16th 2006 was hot and sunny. Halberdiers and a Pipe Band led a few hundred folks from Richmond to Willance's Leap. There they saw the new stone placed for the 400th Anniversary and heard the Willance tale in ballad form. Old stories change in the telling. One of the joys of traditional song is that they do. Many versions of the Willance tale claim he erected three stones to mark the last three leaps of his mare! So now there are three stones. The 1734 copy was lost in the First War but the fragment at St. Mary's looks very like it. As well as the Walk we had Concerts in the town and Darwin Brewery did us a fine Anniversary Ale. Perhaps the first ever matching Ale and CD!
Many thanks to Sarah Macmillan for her photographs of the Anniversary day.
My huge thanks to Shelagh Powell who produced the "stained glass" leaping horse. With long experience in paint media Shelagh is now working also in stained glass.
People often ask what my Guitar is. It was made by Michael Gurian in New Hampshire. The photo is one of the same model. Gurian have quite a fan club!
Thanks to Robin Dale for his portrait showing all of me in grey.
John
